Common names:
Perret's Toad [1].
Classification:
Kingdom - Animalia
Phylum - Chordata
Class - Amphibia
Order - Anura
Family - Bufonidae
Species - Sclerophrys perreti
Distribution:
Sclerophrys perreti is only found and is micro-endemic to one location; Idarne Hills, south-western Nigeria (Figure 2) [1]. Similar habitats within the country suspected to host populations have been surveyed but none were found [1]. This species' area of occupancy is only 23km2 [1].
Details:
Perret's Toad is associated with stone outcrops within forested areas, similar areas in the savannah belt are absent of this species [1]. This species lives independently of water for most of its adult life, residing in shrubby vegetation and trees usually [1]. During breeding, eggs are laid on the soil and the tadpoles develop in the water [1]. The tadpoles are specially adapted to tolerate fast-flowing streams [2].
The species is abundant in the one location it is found but the habitat available is continually decreasing, so the population is assumed to be decreasing [1]. Little is known about the life history of this species and further surveys are needed to understand the current state of the population [1].
Threats to the species:
Logging [1].
Small-scale farming [1].
Pollution from agriculture [1].
