Distribution:
Oophaga speciosa is only found in the western Cordillera (mountains) in Panama, in fewer than 5 locations (Figure 2) [1]. It can be found at ~1370m above sea level [1]. This species' range is less than 5000km2 [1].
Details:
The Splendid Poison Frog resides in humid lowland and montane forests [1]. It breeds independently of a water body, in plants [1]. Eggs are laid in leaf litter and when he young hatch, the female moves them to water-filled plants [2]. Males are very territorial of oviposition and foraging sites [2]. Individuals of this species are bright red [2]. This species' range encompasses a number of protected sites which offer some protection but more research is needed on the population status and life history [1]. Some sources already presume this species to be extinct [3].
