Nannophryne corynetes is found at two locations in Peru; the Abra Málaga Private Conservation Area, Abra Málaga and Wiñay wayna, Machu Picchu (Figure 2) [1]. It is found at 2000-3870m above sea level and it's range is estimated at 781km2 [1].

Details:

The Abra Malaga Toad resides in wet grassland on the edge of montane cloud forests, it is unknown if it can tolerate habitat alteration [1]. Breeding is thought to take place in water [1]. Individuals of this species have enlarged spines on the pad of their feet (Figure 1) [2].

A very rare species, the previous three surveys have failed to record any individuals [1]. The Abra Málaga Private Conservation Area where this species resides, has a large road passing through it [1]. This makes the area more susceptible to landslides and deforestation [1]. The last three surveys for this species did not find any, their population status is unknown [1].

Threats to the species:

  • Infrastructure development [1].

  • Landslides [1].

  • Disease (Chytrid fungus) [1].

  • Logging [1].
