Common names:
Quang's Tree Frog [1].
Classification:
Kingdom - Animalia
Phylum - Chordata
Class - Amphibia
Order - Anura
Family - Rhacophoridae
Species - Gracixalus quangi
Distribution:
This species has been found in three locations, all of which are current or proposed protected areas no further than 10km from each other in Vietnam and Loas [1]. It is expected that the map above, of the protected area populations, is not the true extent of Gracixalus quangi's range, but they are yet to be found elsewhere [1]. This species is found between 600-1300m above sea level over an area of 5349km2 [1].
Details:
This species is found in dense, undisturbed montane forest with permanent or temporary freshwater ponds [1]. Breeding occurs from April to November, males gather in large groups to 'sing' for females [1]. Quang's Tree Frog is sexually dimorphic, with males being larger than females [2]. Their front limbs have finger-like protrusions with no webbing, the back legs are webbed [2]. These frog are a pale, almost see-though green colour with off-white/yellow and black spots [2]. Eggs are laid, up to 10 at a time, on vegetation over-hanging the shallow, muddy pools [1]. When the larvae hatch, they fall into the water to develop further [1]. Due to Gracixalus quangi's dependence on undisturbed habitat, their population is declining as the forests get more and more disturbed [1].
Threats to the species:
Urbanisation and development [1].
Agricultural encroachment [1].
Illegal logging [1].
Introduced species i.e. pets [1].
